Operative and Diagnostic Laparoscopy for Infertility

Laparoscopy is an outpatient surgical procedure often performed to treat infertility. Laparoscopy involves the insertion of a small telescope through a small incision in the belly button under general anesthesia. The laparoscope is able to transfer video images of the pelvis onto a monitor.

Laparoscopy is frequently used as a diagnostic procedure but can also be used to treat endometriosis, scar tissue, remove small fibroids, ovarian cysts, and repair or remove extensively diseased fallopian tubes.

Our New York board certified reproductive endocrinologists, infertility specialists have extensive experience performing delicate laparoscopic procedures.  Each of our infertility specialists completed a Fellowship program which involved advanced training in laparoscopic surgery.

The laparoscopy requires that at least two small incisions be made in the abdomen, one at the belly button and one at the pubic hair line. The laparoscope is inserted through one of these openings and the laparoscopic surgical tools are inserted through the other. These instruments might include the laser, electrosurgical instruments, or scissors to remove endometriosis and scar tissue, as well as repair or remove damaged fallopian tubes.

At the end of the laparoscopy, the instruments are removed and a delicate absorbable suture is used for closing the small incisions. This will leave a barely noticeable very small scar. Because this type of treatment is minimally invasive, recovery time and postoperative discomfort are reduced in comparison to traditional surgery.
